How to Feel Happy Now

I’m having one of those days. I first felt like I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Then I felt I didn’t push hard enough in my morning workout. Then a slew of ‘really no big deal’ work catastrophe’s have led me to feel…well…pretty crappy. And it’s only 2pm.

Following the sage advice of my therapist that ‘the only person responsible for my happiness is me’ I decided to take the next 30 minutes to achieve my goal of getting happy. My mission? To make a list of five things to do immediately that would help me restore my joy. The first thing that popped into my mind was sex (taking a note from Marie Forleo’s interview on Savor Talk! Radio), but I quickly ignored it. If there was ever a day I wasn’t in the mood, it’s this one. Next I thought of exercise, but I already did that earlier and honestly, I feel like my legs are about to fall off. Once I hit my third choice – I finally found my footing and started making my list. Here it goes:

Laugh
I figured finding something simple to make me chuckle would invoke at least temporary happiness. It took me a minute or two, but I was able to remember something funny that happened yesterday and it made me smile. Score 1.

Change Posture
I have possibly the poorest posture of anyone I know and when I’m aggravated, it gets even worse. So, I pulled back my shoulders and forced myself to sit up straight. I now feel taller and my stomach feels nice and flat. Score 2!

Write Down Five Things are Great Right Now
I got out my trusty notebook and tried to write as quickly as possible. 1. I’m Healthy 2. Co-hosting a kick-ass event next week 3. My business is successful 4. I have great family and friends 5. I’m getting out of bed at 5am three mornings a week to work out. Score 3!

Stop Criticizing
The negative self-talk starting at 5am this morning is what got to me to this miserable place. How can I get rid of these thoughts? Just STOP! No I don’t suck. Yes I am smart. Yes I can do it. There – take that critical voice! Score 4!

Talk About It
Instead of telling one person, I decided to vent my frustrations in my favorite blog and share them with all of you. Whew! I’m done, and guess what? I actually do feel better.

What’s your favorite way to feel happy instantly?

  1. Familiar territory post reading the stop criticizing bit. I default to that constantly when I am nowhere near where I believe I should be. If I’m really down deep in some gutter, I find I have to drop whatever I intended to do, no matter how significant any of it was. I wander out to my banana sun chair and just sit there. A lot of it stems from the expectations I place on myself.

Exercise is only fun when you do it without planning for it! I like doing it but I start to dread it if I push it into a particular schedule. I’d twitch at the idea of looking forward to that first thing in the morning hehe.

Glad you found some points for yourself and were able to make some smiles again =)
