Commentary: Life Passes By So Quickly

As the years continue to pile up on this bod of mine, the wiser (so I think),  I become. I look at things much differently than I did when I was in my 20′s. I think the most glaring difference is the fact that I was invincible when I was young.  Now I take the time to make sure one foot gets directly in front of the other. I find I forget small things easier now, even though I try harder to remember them.

I was always, what many call “An Old Soul” maybe because I am a very empathetic person. That doesn’t mean I never put my own selfish needs in front of others,  I did.  But now I think harder to look at life through the other persons eyes. I am slower to criticize and I listen more. I know now that I am far from invincible and this could very well be my last post on this blog. The reason I am making this quick entry into the blog today, is what transpired here in New York to one Plexico Burress.

A young man of 32, who recently was on top of the world, now faces a minimum of 2 years behind bars, away from his family and his freedom. For those of you who are not familiar with Mr Burress, he was a wide receiver for the New York Football Giants.

When I say he was on top of the world he literally was. Two years ago, you see, he caught the winning touchdown to beat the heavily favored New England Patriots in the 42nd Super Bowl.

After his Superbowl victory Burress hit the NYC nightclub scene sporting a loaded hand gun. Sometime during the night the hand gun discharged and he ended up with a bullet buried deep into his leg.

Why he decided to bring a hand gun with him is beyound belief. Here is a guy who not only had his posse as many celebrities acquire, but he also has the ability to have security with him, which is provided by his employer.

Now he faces the loss of  his job and millions of dollars. But most of all, he loses his freedoms, freedom of choice, of being with his family and his ability to continue doing something that has a very short shelf life, namely being a professional football player.

He is not the first  (Vick, Tyson, OJ, come to mind) nor will he be the last. But hopefully some young man and woman out there can learn a lesson from these people.

His legal staffs advice and delaying tactics led Burress to receive a sentence that could have been reduced by plea bargaining.

I doubt anyone in the Giants organization has lost any sleep from this. The fact is last Sunday two new young wide receivers for the Giants caught 10 passes to beat the Cowboys in their first game at Jerry Jones new palatial palace in Dallas.

New day, new game, time passes quickly.
