The Four Major Groups Of Computer Users, Which One Are You???

I was reading one of my friends blogs earlier today and she had a post about how some people have problems using the computer. which got me to thinking (uh oh). As I answered her post in the back of my mind I was running pictures of various people through my head and to what extent they used the computer. The more I thought the more I placed individuals into one of four categories. So here for your viewing pleasure are the 4 sub-groups I came up with.

rabbit ears

1. These people who are not into the computer and have no use for it in their lives. Not afraid just plain not interested. These people usually don’t own a cell phone nor a GPS device. They have no use for HDTV and could even be without a monthly cable bill, because they are sporting a pair of “Rabbit Ears” atop their TV’s. To those of you who are younger, this term refers to an antenna that picks up the local channels. Usually 3 to 4 major networks and a PBS station. They still receive the morning paper and believe high tech is spelled VCR. These people keep hitting their TV sets hoping to receive a signal, but for the last three months since analog has been phased out, are now very frustrated people. Of course there is no chance in hell, this person is even reading this post.

2. This group of people are people, who, like my wife love to use it for smaller tasks like but not limited to;  shopping, reading, games, email, monitoring their investments and paying bills, but that’s it. Something goes wrong they freak out. I have no idea where she finds some of the viruses she picks up. I literally make her PC into a Fort Knox against viruses. But a week later and a spammer is using her machine for his own devices. They have embraced the cell phone for ease of use and convenience. Not a slave to their PC but knowing the rudimentary skills is enough for them. When the virus hits, they are not afraid to call the Geek Squad.

3. This group is very much my group. Mostly self taught and would never refer to ourselves as a GEEK. If trouble comes are way, you’re damn sure we will try and tackle it. Sometimes we win and feel proud, other times we are looking for our reinstall disc. We also tend to love new programs and add them to our already overloaded desktops. Minutes turn into hours and our better halves question our sanity.  We are the bloggers of the world, optimistic people who believe someone in Lansing is happier now because of our profound words. We are usually the same people who believe Adsense and Clickbank will someday make us a steady stream of income. Working from home is an oxymoron to us, we do it already for free as a hobby.

4. Yup, you got it, the last group are the mysterious Geeks. How they absorb information and then re align it, disassemble it. then regurgitate it, astounds us normal human life forms. They talk in a cryptic language and use words, phrases and spew acronyms.  They are the ones we conceive in our minds who use pocket protectors and wear black rim glasses with the ever present tape in the middle holding them together. They are the ones who truly do work at home and get paid, A LOT!! They are the guys, when younger, are in the Geek Squad car. They are the ones who started college at 12 and yes they are the ones, who get better looking the older they get, at least to women. Perhaps because women truly do love men for their brains or is that bank accounts?

clip-image004Lest we not forget, even the 4 major groups also have a great division between the devoted Mac user and of course the rest of us, the PC user. This we can save for yet another day. Caio

  1. Kate

    I’m definitely a number 3.

  2. Tough to say because it is The Toughest source for income.
But yes, people are earning while it is a hobby.

  3. I am completely a number 2 with a side of blogginess.

  4. I am definitely, without a doubt #3.
Self-taught…eager..love a challenge which html and javascript offer very well and I am always thinking of ways to fit a few hours of pc time in my daily schedule even when I am done with my normal pc schedule!

  5. #3 without a doubt! Thanks for the tip on the “seat” I need to use. It really would save a lot of time away from the computer…lol

  6. JasonH

I too am a #3. My computer right now cannot fit another icon on my desktop. I also thought I had invented that idea for the seat to use with the computer, darn :-(

  7. I’m a squished “2-3″. I get the splash of “2″ from a willingness to pay for really tedious and overly complex crap I can kick a few bucks at to resolve (ala lazy). My wife is a solid three: she would spend 90 non-stop frustrated and sleepless hours installing a blender that played M-Pegs and made teeny waffles via the USB port. Then, immediately take an AK-47 into the manufacturer’s warehouse and kill everything that moved.

But I think I can say with all honesty I don’t know anyone that meets enough criteria for a “1″.

-Do those people even exist anymore? I’ll bet a regional US map would be maybe a big dusting of coma victims in hospitals, and then maybe three states in the Southeast. Tops.

And then I would argue states that still have Civil War Reenactments shouldn’t really count anyway. And like they would even care? I’ll bet they would thank me for my polite telegraph, and forget the whole thing.

Either that, or twenty years later some kid on a flimsy raft will come up the Mississippi and stick a flag in to claim St. Louis -then we get a hilarious YouTube too.

    It’s Win-Win really.

    (Great blog/site BTW)

  8. I am the number 2. Definitely.

  9. Great article! Enjoyed your wit! And love that pic with the toilet seat! LOL

  10. About 15 years ago I wrote a graduate paper on gender differences in computer use. The literature on research indicated that men mostly used computers to play games and women used them to get work done. I would classify what your wife does as mostly work. Have the guys quit playing games? I think not! Call me a 2,3,4 and beyond. And female.

  11. I definitly fall into group 3 like yourself. “Mostly self taught and would never refer to ourselves as a GEEK”. We’re the kind of people that teach ourselves how to play video games and learn all the tricks on our own. We are in no way geeks, we like to build with our hands and play sports.

    Great Post!

  12. Definitely #3. The rest of my family are #2. They drive me nuts! Just the other day I was asked if they could have my other PC back home. I believe my exact words were “I wouldn’t mind but you all have a magical ability to destroy your computer within days and I’d prefer that machine stay alive and well”.

Their computers are completely virus ridden, slow, impossible for me to try anything on. I’m usually just baffled as to how they managed to do it.

In response to Mac and PC users, don’t neglect the double lovers! Well versed in both, although PC is gaming/work and Mac is some work/everything else.

  13. Yep I am in group 3 and my wife is in group 0, she may figure out how to switch it on one day. Group 4 scare me, especially with that photograph. Oh yes and I am a PC but regret that almost every day.

  14. I am a #3. My partner is a #3. My daughter is a #3. My son is on his way to become a #3.
#1 do not like #3 = divorce & family feud.
(I only speak from experience lol)

  15. I don’t think there are only 4 groups. It’s better to think of it more like a speedometer (the analog type) where you have your #1 type on one side and then somebody like founder of google Sergey Brin on the far side.

I use both the mac and pc – but believe the mac is much better. Oh, you need to mention the Linux people too.

    thanks

  16. I’m definitely a nr. 3. A self taught blogger using too much free time with my laptop. Not sure if it’s a hobby or my fulltime job nr. 2. Of course I can fix my own computer problems. But it ends up getting worse and I’m calling my little brother to help me out. Because I’m surfing on crappy websites, the computer is so f@#ked up, that my little witchdoctor brother can’t safe it. Anyway, its time to get a new laptop. And I love the toilet in the office.

  17. I’m the number #2, if something goes wrong or get viruses I will freak out, directly call my brother to fix it lol

  18. I’m a #3..and still waiting on Google to send me my .88 cents for 6months of work..Hey I have a .01 final ATT cell phone bill to pay..
