Mens Clothing Stores In NYC Circa 1920 Pictorial
Having a day off can be a wonderful thing. Especially if you have nothing planned on a gloomy day. Today was such a day. While doing research for this blog today, I wanted to do something a bit different then the normal post of the day. As I wandered about many different websites, I happened upon a true gold mine of historical photographs.
Being a mens blog I wanted to research some photographs for our male readership, specifically mens clothing. I combined my love for history, photography and mens clothing all in one. Not to mention I was able to narrow that down to the city, that to me is the worlds capital city and one that is closest to my heart. That city is New York City. The one that Frank Sinatra immortalized in song and the one, that is still today, the most important city in the United States and for that matter the world.
I went to the New York City Library system and sifted through thousands of old monochrome photos that have been digitally saved, never to be lost through the ravages of physical deterioration.
Throughout the coming months I will, gather up more of these brilliant pieces of paper, that reveal amazing, long lost moments in time.
Today as the post title indicates will be devoted to clothing stores, between the years of 1879 to 1955 that have been captured in celluloid. While this is just a brief glimpse in the amazing amount of photographs the NYC Library has, I wanted to share a few of them with you. I also urge you all to venture out on your own to see what you might be missing.
Each photo that was picked has been cropped and/or magnified to discern parts within the photo itself. No picture was altered in any way and some are in a series to explain various parts of the total photo as a whole.
Where I could I added a brief comment, but in and of themselves, the picture tells a thousand words. In the coming months I hope to put together a series for the holidays, in particular Thanksgiving and Christmas in New York. Enjoy

What a treat! I love pictures and I love history and I LOVE NEW YORK! Anyone who hasn’t visited MUST go. It’s an experience of a life time. And yes…..all New Yorkers feel the same way Glenn does….it’s the center of the universe. Thanks for some really great pictures
Terrific pictures!
Sometimes when I’m searching for an idea I can get easily lost when I stumble upon historical photographs. My earliest recollections are from NYC in the 60′s – and I can tell you that back then you’d still see much of the same elaborate signage that you find in these photos.
It’s great how pictoral moments frozen in time, even before your own can remind you of wonderful childhood memories.
Wow! I thoroughly enjoyed that. Amazing how time alters a lot of things. It reminds of an old postcard I bought from an antique shop. On the postcard is a picture of the hotel where I used to work but the postcard was from the 1920′s Austria. On the back of the postcard was a reservation confirmation for the hotel and the price was 10 pfennig (German currency) for half-board. The writing was ever so formal with loads of loops and hoops. Looking at the picture it was a delight to see the kind of clothes fashion people were into.
I love how everyone always dressed up back then. Everyone seemed to take great pride in their appearance. What happened?
Have a terrific day and weekend Glenn. Big hug.
Gorgeous photos and such a great trip through time. And there weren’t even any residual tachyons! Seriously, lovely collection of old photos, you did a great job. But I fear you have an obsession with clothing. Oh well you could have worse obsessions.
Thanks Joella.
As far as an obsession, this blog was built with the intention to be a mens fashion blog, hence the many articles involving fashion. But as all blogs, the content takes you in all different directions, but I try to go back to the original theme whenever possible.
Very cool indeed.
There is something about the black and white finish on photos that totally adds a sense of past and nostalgia.
Thanks for a fantastic line up of what once was
Always great so see my buddy from “up north”. Hoping you have a wonderful weekend.
That was a super time travel! My eyes just poured over each one of them. I do enjoy visiting New York (who doesn’t) especially around the holidays. There’s nothing quite like it.
As far as bugs go, you are by far the cutest of them all. Hope all is well in your part of the woods, or bushes, or where ever bugs may roam.
Hi Glenn, some great photos, I love to see stuff from when I was growing up. One of your captions puzzled me, however, “notice the attire, all suits”. Am I to understand that not everyone wears suits there now? Even here on the edge of a jungle in the Philippines we all wear suits, even the women folk. I’ve only been gone four months, and it pains me to see that America is going to hell already.
Oh the innocence of those good old days if only we could bring them back..memory lane…
Wonderful..

Hello everyone, it is Thanksgiving Day! I’m happy with my extra day off, and I am planning to doing something fun that will probably involve a bike ride and seeing something new in Tell City I haven’t seen yet.
You write something new at Thanksgiving?
