Fewer Posts Equal Better Reading

I originally started to blog because I wanted to pass on tips to guys about mainly two subjects: fashion and investing. It has pretty much consumed me for the past two months. So much so, my dear wife is wondering if I am carrying on an affair with someone on the internet.

But each day the posts seem to come from thin air and deep inside somewhere in my subconscious, they combine or collide together and the end result lies here in between yesterday and tomorrows post.

I would like to narrow my topic of discussion to a few main ideas, but those ideas have to yet show up. Fashion and finance have had to share, many other subjects. So this is what you, the reader gets. Sometimes a coherent article, most of the time a splatter of my muddles thoughts

I recently was asked to guest post at Blogs With Wings and did a piece aptly named ” Why Blog?”  Basically I came to the conclusion we do this as an extension of ourselves and that you the reader are our sounding boards and consulars at the same time.

Lately I have tried to balance my time on here and my personal time with my family, to make more equal. In doing so, I still find myself wanting to check the emails, or comments when I am away from the computer. But now I wait longer to check the blog and glad that I did. When I do come back ot the blog it is nice to see many new comments and each time it is a nice present.

My wife and I finished a movie this evening called the Julie/Julia which was a nice movie, not great by any means. It involved a woman who was close to her thirtieth birthday and felt something missing in her life so she decided to blog. A blog about cooking her way through the Julia Child French Cookbook and post on her progress.

Of course her ending was happy, she was giving of movie contract, book contract and probably a few more great opportunities, because she started a blog. She was also very lucky.

I know that isn’t the reason we start blogs, to get a movie based on our blogs. Nor do any of us feel that someday we will be able to retire and just become a blogger. I am sure out of over 200 million blogs out there the chance of that happening is probably 5 in 200 million, which are probably the same odds as hitting the lottery.

But I believe each of us who do write a blog,  in the back of their head, feel that maybe our blogs mean something to someone. It’s funny how it grows into an important piece of your personal psyche. Exposing yourself daily to people you have never met nor most likely ever will.

After watching the movie I went to the Julies blog and their it was, the last post done I believe in Aug of 2004. It was a time capsule, a glimpse of someones life they had spent for a year writing. It had an beginning and an end. While the blog no longer is updated, it is still there, open for anyone to read at any time. Like a book on the bookshelf.

It gave me a a new outlook on my blog. It raised more questions then answers I am afraid. But clearly it made me think. To narrow down why I am blogging, keeping to the subject matter of the blog. And to finish what I have started and to think about an ending point.

Of couse this is a fairly new blog, so it is evolving each day as I write it.  While I am not thinking about what the end of this blog will look like, or at what date. It does make me think harder at what I am trying to accomplish with it.

The one major decision that I will start involves the frequency of my posts on here. I have been updating on a daily basis, which on many days is getting harder to do. The first month it was really quite easy, as I had many things to say. But now it is increasingly harder to post on something meaningful.  So instead of a daily post, I will be cutting back and will post a few times a week. Hopefully with a better outcome and something that you will want to read from start to finish.

  1. Glenn, glad to hear you are spending more time with your wife and watching “chick flicks”. Maybe you need to spend some time with the peeps and I over in the jungle. I find it easy to post every day, since I never deal with anything meaningful like you do. But I understand, I will cherish the blogs that come forth from you even more, and heck, I’ve got plenty of time to blog since I am a retired Bonehead. Hey,dear, could you pass me another cold San Miguel, please.

  2. Another fascinating look inside Glenn’s head. I think it’s a good thing that you write so thoughtfully. By that I mean that you reflect on the reasons why you blog and what it is you are actually trying to accomplish. Too often people start a blog and do not reflect at all on what it is they’re doing. These blogs seldom evolve and often simply fade away. A blog’s evolution is dependent on the thought processes of the writer. And I think you are correct in thinking that blogging frequency is not as important as quality. By all means blog less often, but keep up a regular schedule so your readers are not left wondering when and if you’ll ever post again. I am confident that you will work out a plan that works for you!

  3. Balancing the work/family life is top priority. Yes, I do look at blogging as a “job” in that I feel the need to devote some amount of time to it each day. Keep up some kind of schedule. Put thought into what I am going to accomplish for the day/week/month. I’m sure your many readers will appreciate you even more.

  4. I hear you on this one. I don’t do much original stuff, and it’s getting tougher to find/steal/ funny stuff. I need a set of writers I think. I can so relate.

Have a terrific day. Big hug. :)

  5. Hi Glenn, I agree with Joella, that frequency is not as important as quality, but a regular schedule is even better to keep your readers. In my case, I just blog when I feel like doing it, not to attract readers or make money but just to express how I feel that day. I do not have a schedule, So, I do not have a lot of regular readers. However, I really feel good receiving comments from a few readers. Speaking of schedule, my wife and I will be flying to Manila at the end of the week. Stay there for 4 days and fly to my island Paradise, Marinduque and hopefully hibernate there for 5 months, then back here in California to be in time to pay my state and federal taxes. ouch, ouch.. so, if you do not hear from me for a while, you know I in the beach not in front of my PC. Keep Blogging but do not neglect the family specially your spouse!

  6. I have never let anything or anyone ball and chain this girls mind for the exact reason that so many bloggers quit or burn out.

If you are forced to do anything there is no passion or realism in the delivery. This is the same reason I comment selectively because I am a firm believer in ‘if you have nothing good to say…say nothing at all’!

Life is all about organization and prioritizing ours time on earth.
Family first my friend…never forget that!
Computers do not make good bed fellows :)

Your intelligence is glowing and I look forward to your thoughts when they happen!

  7. really loved the article added to my favourites

  8. Sam

I hear you because it happened to me too. That’s why I don’t do much blog lately. Because my hubby doesn’t understand it. He said that I spend my spare time on blogging instead spending with him and my daughter :) . And also like you sometimes hard to think and make an interesting post. Talk to you later. enjoy the rest of the week.

  9. I really enjoyed the post and looking forward to the next.

    Happy Holiday

  10. I enjoyed the post Glenn as I can relate to spending maybe too much time on my blog, and the marketing etc. that goes along with it.

Blogging is a terrific way to voice what’s on your mind and share your thoughts, no matter if you present them in a serious or humorous manner. I’ve had my blog for a little less than two years – and frankly it’s only been since I’ve been out of work these past few months that I’ve been able to work on it regularly. It continues to be great fun, but once the new business starts up in January, I expect my posts will diminish in frequency as well, but that’s ok – because part of the joy is to have that creative outlet to look forward to, to get away from those things we call “work”.

  11. This rings many bells with little me. First start with my main opinion website and I already had about 30 articles to choose from. I had years of pent up frustration from questions I’ve been asked, events I’ve witnessed or been a part of and such things, and as a result, it was incredibly easy to get pages after pages on digital paper. It was also a relief and in a way I had been writing all the things I wish I had screamed to the people, events that caused the thoughts and reactions.

Nowadays, I’ve reached the point where I pretty much wrote all that I have felt in the past. It’s not as easy or quick to write up something as it was on day one through ten. I rely on the present to fill up the writing needs, whether it be something on tv, something someone mentions or does, or just a thing that happens to come up in the moment. It can be a hit or miss and is not something that seems to happen daily. But, the moment something happens that I have a strong reaction or opinion on, I get to a make a digital memory of it.

A wee bit of ranting there, don’t we all love that. At this point my website has a meaning for me, it’s only a bonus if other bodies find any meaning in it as well. Otherwise the moment I start writing for the sake of reeling in others, I would have in one way or another, have abandoned my own thoughts. Which I could never do for strangers.

What was I talking about now? The clock just ticked 8am…one can wish to be as lucky as that other blogger. I guess as they say in lotto..you never know.

  12. I think many people can relate, and I am one of those people. I think that’s why I have one blog that I post to periodically and one that I do quite often with reviews. You do start to run out of content and you lose readers at the same time.

  13. Glenn, thanks for sharing. I too find myself spending more time on my blog than hanging with hubby at times. But he enjoys TV in his down time, so in my case what’s the harm. He does tell me “come talk to me” when he wants to chat and I know that’s my cue that he needs my time and attention :)

I have no plans to give up my blog any time soon, but maybe a schedule would help so that I blog more when he’s at work or busy on his own project. Hmmm, better give this some serious thought. I love my hubby :)
