The Ten Best Rock Bands and Songs Of All Time

Google Buzz

While listening to the radio this afternoon I heard three songs in a row of bands that I will classify in, my all time favorite bands list. Being it’s Friday night  I thought it would be fun, to come up with a few lists of some of my favorites.  It’s much harder then I thought it would be.

This list is some of the music I grew up with and are the songs that influenced me at certain, special times in my life. I know there are some that would never make a “voted” top ten, but they are mine. Just as I am sure your top ten would be different then mine also.

The names in these lists are not in any particular order. There are most likely a few bands that influenced music more then the ones I listed, like The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead and the Beatles, but did not make my list.

Note: trying to pick the top ten songs, proved to be much more difficult then bands. So the list of songs encompass twenty instead of ten.

I dare you to sit down and come up with ten of yours. I would love to hear your top ten.  The four categories that I came up with are:

  • Top Ten Rock Bands
  • Top Ten Twenty Rock Songs
  • Top Ten Twenty  Rock Ballads
  • Top Ten Twenty Motown Hits

The names in these lists are not in any particular order. These are my favorite and doubt they would be in any official top ten list. There are most likely a few groups that influenced music more then the ones I listed, like The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead and the Beatles. But these are the bands and songs that influenced me the most and of course the ones I loved and still do.

    1. Led Zeppelin – Of Course!
    2. The Who – Number 2? Uhh, I’ll spot them at…
    3. David Bowie and the Spiders from Mars – Not in the top 10
    4. Pink Floyd – # 4 for PF
    5. U2 – In the 80’s I would have completely agreed. I wouldn’t include Bono in the top 100 today. And, it’s too bad for the rest of the band.
    6. Roxy Music – Didn’t make my top 10
    7. Bob Marley and the Wailers – Didn’t make my top 10 rock bands and that is not to say what Bob Marley did wasn’t great.
    8. The Doors – I’m placing the Doors at #…
    9. The Eagles – These last two…
    10. Earth, Wind & Fire – you’re kidding I take it.

Rock bands I think should be in Rock n’ Roll Bands in the top 10 are:

    My top 10 Rock Bands of all time would be;

    1) The Beatles
    2) The Rolling Stones
    3) Led Zeppelin
    4) Jimi Hendrix
    5) The Doors
    6) The Who
    7) Aerosmith
    8) Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
    9) Pink Floyd
I’m placing a few deserving bands in the number 10 spot. It happens.
    10) AC/DC, Neil Young, Queen, Peter Frampton, Deep Purple, Grand Funk Railroad, Jethro Tull, BTO, Van Halen, Tom Petty… now I am in a top 20. I’m sorry Bono took the path he did, I hope the Eagles hang out forever (I’m pretty sure Joe Walsh will play until he can’t any longer) David Bowie is great, perhaps in the top 25. The only ones I really don’t understand why they were in a top 10 RnR category are Roxy Music, Earth Wind & Fire and especially Bob Marley. But art in any way, shape or form is so much like love. Great topic!

  4. Oh my God these songs ARE awesome. Did I miss Journey’s “Open Arms”. That has got to be the sweetest love ballad ever!!!!

  5. Hey Glenn –

You were right – seems it IS difficult to narrow down a list of your favorite into just ten! So nice to see “The Flame” by Cheap Trick on your list, an oft-overlooked classic and one of my personal faves. The band did not want to release the song as a single because they didn’t want to hurt their straight ahead rock image, but the record company forced the issue. When they switched record companies – they often omitted the song from their live performances, sadly.

  6. Remember my age, Elvis, the Beatles, Sonny and Cher…to name a few…and then there is Andre Bocelli (not sure of the spelling…and Josh Groagin..however you spell him.)

This old lady love the oldies and goodies…

    Best to you…

  7. I can see your age shining through :)
Love them all…especially Pink Floyd…oh do I have memories to their sound…yummie :)
Led Zeppelin is next on my list for some interesting trips down memory lane.

Music is to similar to smells…they trigger off so many good memories !

  8. Pink Flold for sure. I use to see the laser show with their music playing at the planetarium. Aww, the memories.

  9. ann

You have some excellent choices there. May have to go pull out some old CD’s now and listen to some tunes :)

  10. Led Zeppelin has to be my all-time fave. I actually stopped listening to them for about ten years, and when I added them to my digital collection, it was like hearing them for the first time, like, ‘Wow…this is why they blew my mind when I was 15″

Nice list though. IMO, I’d swap Doctor My Eyes with Running On Empty. David Lindley’s slide solo kills me everytime on that one.
