Is The Pornography Business In Trouble?
What industry dates back to the cave man, has worldwide sales of over $57 billion, can be accessed at any 4 star hotel room, has over 72% of men visiting over 4.2 million websites (12% of all websites) every month and can now boast over 9 million women viewers each month? Of course it’s the Porn industry. The love/hate industry that has been on the front lines of the tug of war over the first amendment for the past 20 years.

A few statistics you might not have known:*
- Porn revenue is larger than all combined revenues of all professional football, baseball and basketball franchises.
- US porn revenue exceeds the combined revenues of ABC, CBS, and NBC (6.2 billion)
- Child porn generates $6 billion annually.

So with statistics like this, how can this mega billion dollar industry be in trouble? Well, first of all this industry like all others have seen it’s sales and profits fall because of the economic downward spiral. But this industry more then most is seeing it’s dollars fall faster then most. Ironically the porn industry which has been the leader in making the Internet more accessible, by being the leader in: streaming videos, downloads via the newest, faster applications, a plethora of payment options and customization for every desire, are the same reasons profits keep falling. Even if your a blogger, we are even offered free plug-ins for offering our readers free porn ourselves.
With so many ways to obtain porn, a growing percent that are free, this industry is facing the same problems the music industry has been dealing with for the past decade, namely services like Napster and under the radar sites that pop up literally overnight and impossible to stop. The consumer is able to receive their favorite fetish for free.

One of the newest trends the industry is trying to combat this slide is by, hold you hat, upgrading production and actually rolling out full length features, pirates and all with big budgets and plots. It will be interesting to see lines being read with their mouth full. Most porn films are shot from start to finish in as little as 10 hours and less then ten thousand dollars, you can look forward to seeing budgets bumped up to ten million dollars with computer generated graphics and real honest to god writers.
It remains to be seen if these new steps will be successful. But an industry that boasts the statistic of having the first taste of pornography for a boy being the age of 11 years old, I honestly doubt the lust for viewing such activities will ever diminish.
Sometimes too much of a good thing can be the one of the first nails in one’s coffin.

I loved that last photograph. I’m sure it’s much cheaper than dating. Thanks for the chuckle.
Have a terrific day Glenn. Big hugs.
Hee hee I find this amusing. The line about the “mouth full” made me laugh out loud. Funny and icky at the same time when you think about it.
I haven’t shed any tears over the music industry’s plight. I definitely won’t be worried about the porn industry losing money.
Yeah, I pretty much feel the same way. Whenever I see people cry over movie pirating, music pirating with all the millions that are being made anyway, it just makes me roll my eyes. If they were making a more average amount of money below the 7 figures, then I may conjure up a sympathy chip.
hey I own PIRATES. LOL…. Pirates 2 is coming out soon!
The CGI was pretty cool in the first one! NO REALLY!
The last poster is interestingly said.
Hi Glenn, first of, sheesh, I see my sister-in-law’s picture, Pepper Pinay (clever, huh, Pinay is slang for female in Philippines), is shown as the recent visitor since I am using her to promote my blog on MyBlogLog instead of seeing my mug on it. But hey, it kind of fits in with your theme for the day, sex sells (well, guess it used to), and I don’t think I can even look at porn on my computer without getting arrested in the Philippines as they are pretty strict here.
But honestly, do they think big budget porn is going to help sales, like who really cares. I don’t think guys look at porn for the great production values (not that I look at and don’t want to land in a Third World country’s jail.)
BPoor little porn industry – having problems? Hah – the Blog Angel laughs at you! The very existence of it leaves a tarnish on the human race in general especially when there are children involved.
Maybe the government will start making porn now. We could really shave the deficit!
Joella said it perfectly. Oh too bad that the porn industry is suffering. If that is true the economy really is in trouble.
UG…this topic will most definitely ignite my most passionate negative side. I have no remorse for anyone who profits at the expense of the morality of people.
Pornography like any other addictive element can never be said to be healthy nor natural for anyone.
I know that where their is a demand there is a market but when it crosses lines of humanity as it most definitely does in the incidents of Child pornography…it has created more than just a profit margin..it has created monsters.
Pornography in itself demoralizes women and creates a false sense of acceptance. Women think they are gaining through sexual enticement which turns them into pieces of meat…for lack of a better terminology.
Bottom line…a balance in everything is a must…porn has been taken to a new level where the option of balance has been surpassed…it is a sad thing all for the price of a profit.
Brings me to the oldage saying of…’ Money is the root of all evil’
The last photograph…is that to justify porn or make light of it? That is my question!
Like others have posted, I have no problem with the porn industry “going under”. Sorry… had to do it.
I think that like the music industry, the porn industry will find a way to adapt, as it has.
Funny, there was a study done in Montreal recently to find out what ill effects porn had on men, but for the study, they needed male test subjects who had never watched porn. Needless to say, they couldn’t find any. Here’s the article:
