Manly Resolve: Three Simple Steps to a Healthier 2010

This is another great guest post from Kevin Sanders for us here at Man Over Board and boy do you guy/girls love him. I get more emails about his posts then all of mine combined. Not to mention Kevin is truly one great guy who has a very successful blog himself at Strong and Fit where you can get all the information you need to live a healthy and successful life. We are blessed to have Kevin and know you will enjoy this post. Thanks Kevin

OK guys, it’s time to talk about New Year’s resolutions and your health.

I have two primary roles as a fitness blogger:

to inform and motivate.

This one will be more motivational: I’m going to try to get you to do some things you already know you should.

Socrates was right: The unexamined life is not worth living. New Year’s is an opportunity for us to honestly look at ourselves and see how we could improve. Maybe you are afraid of making a New Year’s resolution—maybe you are afraid to fail. So be it, but I’d rather fail trying to do something great than settle for mediocrity.

Here are three simple things you could do to have a healthier 2010:

1. Stop smoking:

Yes, I know it’s hard—so are heart attacks, strokes, and lung cancer. In case that isn’t reason enough, watch this video on what it can do to your sex life . If you quit cold turkey you’ll be physically detoxed from nicotine in just three days—three days of hell for a life of freedom from the health and financial cost of your nicotine addiction. And guess what? Quit now and by 2011 your risk of a heart attack will have already dropped in half.

2. Change Your Diet:

I’m not saying you have to spend 2010 eating carrots and tofu (not for me). But you can make some simple changes, like eating more lean protein and cutting back on processed carbohydrates. Not ready for that. No problem, I’ll make it even easier: just change what you drink. That’s right—you may get noticeable results just buy cutting out all liquid calories (sodas, ect—but keep the lowfat milk). Some studies have shown this strategy to be even more effective than changing food habits.

3. Exercise:

What’s the best exercise? The answer is simple—one you’ll actually do. Find something you enjoy that get’s your muscles moving and your heart pumping. It can be anything: basketball, boxing, weights training, martial arts—just do something! The choices are limitless, especially with so many online resources available.
Be a healthier man in 2010.

The only one stopping you is you!

Again I can’t thank Kevin enough to give us guys and girls some great motivational and inspirational tips, on keeping us in living longer, healthier and ultimately HAPPIER.

  1. I don’t smoke.

    I eat a healthy diet.

I exercise on a regular basis.

I couldn’t agree more with is post. Excellent.

Have a terrific day. Big hug to Glenn. :)

  2. I never really started smoking so that’s one checked off. As to the other… I’m already too nice so I really need to have some kind of vices to prevent me from sinking into complete wimpiness.

  3. This is a great way to start a New Year — stop smoking, eat healthy food, and exercise.

Reading the post makes me recall again our Latin motto while in college: “Mens sana corpore sano” — a sound mind in a sound body.

Thanks for this unique post — every person who wants to keep fit and healthy for the new year needs this reminders.

  4. This is a great post. And I agree that eating healthy and exercising is a great way to live. But I think one main ingredient is to be happy which isn’t always easy but it sure helps to have a positive attitude. Makes it much easier to eat right and exercise and don’t smoke. Good advice.

  5. Hi, MOB, and thanks for the well wishes and kind words over at my blog.

Yes, Kevin sums it all up pretty well. And I’ll just add, there’s nothing to it but to do it! ;)

Hey, I’d give you an interview anytime, just ask!

Take care, and hope you have a happy, healthy, prosperous New Year! ;)

  6. I am afraid I am guilty of all three. I am however working on them. I have the exercise going pretty good. Now that the holidays are over. Time for the food. And the other is way past overdue.
    Have a Happy New Year

  7. Glenn, thanks for posting this.
Kevin, excellent advice on all three points.
