Man Over Board

All Because You Gave Aunt Betsy Your Spinach Recipe.

As many of the regular readers of this blog can see, there has been a few changes. We hope all good ones, that will make your stay here more enjoyable and also easier to read,  comment and most importantly socialize. You might also noticed that I have eliminated over 75% of the widgets that went up and down the side bars of this page.

Socialized is “That” word we hear a lot of, but I am not to sure we all want to jump in and get our feet wet, at least not just yet. Let me be the first to tell you, it’s not that hard, really!!. It can be a bit time consuming at first, depending on what Social Media sites you already belong to.That is the hardest part, signing up. But even if you only belong to two or three. That is two or three more groups of friends and strangers who have never read, let alone knew you had a blog. And boy do they multiply like rabbits!!

Make it easy on them to click simple icons and bam they are at your virtual doorstep and guess what? The door is wide open for them to walk right in. I won’t get all technical and geeky. I am the last one you would want to explain anything technical. But the new plug ins and widgets that so many great developers have been working on, are really amazing at what they can do. The best part is they’re FREE!!

It makes communicating so much easier with people who usually just hang out,  at Facebook or My Space. Or they could be the ones that only use email and that’s it. Now you can deliver your daily post right to them and if they choose to read it they don’t have to go anywhere but their email inbox. And better yet, if they decide to comment on it, they can do it right from their email account too.

Now imagine you changing your TV channel without your remote? Kinda foolish now a days right? Well this is the new technology that is akin to that same remote. It’s time to stop getting up and down to change the channel. “Just click it”

I have read many blogs and people tend to say they same thing in regards to Twitter. “Just what the hell is it and why use it? Makes no sense to them, why someone would blurb a 140 character message in the first place. But I have a feeling that many of you that are  reading this right now, own a blog. Well??????? Tell people, “HEY I JUST WROTE ABOUT THE GREAT CREAMED SPINACH RECIPE U WERE RAVING ABOUT AT CHRISTMAS” OK you get it, that might have been a few characters  over or under 140 (that’s how many you get with each tweet), but the fact is, you took the time to write about it, then why not let people know it’s ready for them to read it and use it?. Better yet,  now they can even pass the same recipe on to Aunt Betsy in Milford,”here’s that damn recipe we all been wanting from the holidays

Aunt Betsy loves her creamed spinach, oh yeah!

Twitter is here to stay, Social Networking is here to stay, To some of you it looks like a lot of work, but believe me, if I can do it, so can you. Hell I  have been to most everyone of your blogs and you write better then I do, you take better pictures then I do and you have a hell of a lot more people coming by and commenting then I do.

Two months ago Google told me I was a zero, now they tell me I am a three. Big Deal. But if  that means more new people will be  stopping by and a few of them telling their friends then damn it, in a few months I want to be a freaking five or six or whatever, however they figure such rankings. So I keep rambling on and try my best to keep you, my post prized reader, entertained.

So here’s a new resolution for New Years for ya. I talked about where new bloggers can get traffic from in the last couple of posts. Many of you enjoy your blog(s) and have met many new friends from blogging. Just think how many more you will get to meet and how much easier it will be if you put up a couple of these widgets and just give them a chance.

Not to mention those blogs that have subjects like animals, families or cars, etc,. Now more people will know about you and guess what?  You are not getting them because you keep clicking on the drops, or traffic exchanges, they come because they want to, they like your subject, they LIKE you??  Not to mention some of the charitable things we bloggers do.  It will help make folks more aware, donate time or advice,  some might even donate shhhh money, (even if you are your own charitable organization).

Just take baby steps, but each one you take is like the old Ponzi Scheme, it starts off with one, then two then four and eight and on and on. like rabbits. All because you gave Aunt Betsy your Spinach Recipe.

    • Oh my by the way I sooo forgot to stop by and wish you a very Happy New Years Dorothy. So a HAPPY NEW YEARS !!!!

I think you have to read the previous 4 posts on the building of traffic for newer bloggers and how it all interconnects.

Trying to explain exactly what Social Medial/Networking is, well in one post would be quite hard. But I do think if you have the time to read the other posts, you will see have everything is starting to become all connected to each other. And that traffic just doesn’t have to come from places like Entrecard etc.

In the last post it gives you a list of some really great blogging sites that can help people get started better then I could ever try to in Social Networking.

But just to give you a hint, this question you just asked can get twitted by anyone and bam it’s all over the web for others to see. That is basically what is happening now, everything connected.

Kind of hard to explain without some reading and understanding, or perhaps someone much better at explaining it to you, like Eli, Aldon, Atniz or Sheila to mention a few from Entrecard that run great blogs on helping bloggers become better.

I am sorry also for just mentioned these 4 people, as they’re are so many more, they were the first to come to the top of my small head :-) .

  4. Again some great information Glenn. I belong to Twitter but don't use it and I reckon I better start using it. These are great posts, and I too need to come back and read them some more. Your new look is great. I like it a lot. Also, I think using Facebook and Twitter makes you think even harder for a title to your post. Need to get everyone's attention.

    • Marg the best thing I started to do everyday and I recommend this to EVERYONE. Is just go to Twitter and pick out one of your followers and then click on their followers. Then go down that list and click people you think you like to follow them. Each day do that with a 100 it takes 4 minutes. Then the next day, 24 hours later if they haven't followed you back then unfollow those people who are not following you back. This builds your list easily. If you want they have apps that will unfollow your people for you and also click on 100 a day if you want to. But keep it simple and easy.

But guess what Marge? They have apps that di t hat fir you if you want and it can build your following to amazing HUGENESS. But, I would take mt time and grow it, because then you have people that really like you and you like them. So a few a day is good.

  5. Another great post. I think I will skip the creamed spinach though. I still think you are trying to take over my niche you old pirate! lol I am very impressed with the way you have cleaned up the side bars and made the import things more accessible to your readers. I like to think that I may have influenced you in some small way.
My recent post Blog Success – Don't Make New Year's Resolutions for Your Blog

    • Of course I am taking your job away, your way to busy keeping your VERY HELPFUL Blog With Wing list updated for us. Which reminds me, those who are on Joella's list, please let her know if you are taking EC off it, of shutting down your blog? It really really helps her, but in the long run it helps all those who go to BWW's and use the good things Joella has there.

I don't think I like what I started commenting on everyone's post now. I am adding on another hour to my day, because I type like 3 words a minute, <—needs to be shot o.0

  6. Glenn,

Yet again, another good post, and thanks for mentioning me in your comments.I think a good way to think of social media is this. If you write something important, you want to tell your friends about it. Social media is how you tell your friends about something important you've written on your blog.

One way of looking at it is that you want to speak with your friends where they are, on Facebook or Twitter for example. Another approach is to blanket the town. I tend to go with this second approach in an effort to reach new people. With that, let me point out a few tools that I really like.

First, I like to get as much of this automated as possible. I use TwitterFeed to subscribe to the RSS feed for my blog and post Tweets on Twitter about it. FriendFeed and Facebook both subscribe to my TwitterFeed, so it gets repeated there.

For special situations, I like to send messages via ping.fm Ping sends the same message to a bunch of social networking sites all at the same time. I only use it from time to time because I don't want to overwhelm people with messages.

One final site that I like to recommend is Dandyid. Dandyid gives you the ability to list many of your social media sites, and makes it easier for others to find different sites they have in common with you. You can check out my DandyID at http://www.dandyid.org/users/ahynes1

    Aldon
My recent post This Week In Woodbridge

    • Aldon it's always a pleasure to have you stop by and indulge us with your knowledge. With Aldon's blog you will notice he doesn't use fancy pictures. Aldon is much more techical and political in his blog, because that is what Aldon does in real life. But if you give his blog a chance you find out he''s a heck of a nice guy, who helps reviews new gadgets, ask him about his new Christmas toy ;-) or he tells us what's happening around his family, etc.

But Aldon is far ahead of a lot of other bloggers because he uses these tools to help get his words out. hell the other day I knew it snowed where he lived and the roads were bad. Not a bad thing to do for people who live around him, don't ya think?

In Aldon's post/comments he always brings up good points and he did here letting you know their are other applications for these accounts like Twitter and Facebook have. DON'T LET THAT SCARE YOU. You do'n' have to sign up to 1000's of different gadgets. But the few that he did bring up, do the work for him, like when he finishes a post he has an app that automatically picks it up and sends it over to Twitter for him.

So once you get the basics downs (D at Grammology and Sandee) you will be able to sit on your boat, check in on your blog for a minute and say hi, or tweet us you just passed Catalina Island.

  7. Popping in to say well done once again in offering and sharing vital info for us bloggers of the always fun and full of great people blogging world!

    • Thank you Dorothy, and folks if you noticed in Dorothy's comment she has a picture. Thats a Gravatar, you can get one easy and then instead of a blank face you have a pic, moe people response to pics. Not only does Dorothy's comment have a pic it also has a T in the bottom left, that tells everyone that she is on Twitter and her name on Twitter is Dorothylaf . So now all of you who LOVE D's site and information she always gives us you can tell the the Twitter people all about her. Don't you think she's worth doing that for? I do am I will Twit about D. Wow it will take me all of less then one minute to do that. That's how easy it is :-)

  8. Glen, this was a great post. Your writing is really evolving. I'm glad you and so many others have discovered the importance of social media. It's an excellent way of getting your blog noticed. But more importantly, it's a fabulous opportunity to meet wonderful, like minded people.

Your Twitter following is exploding. I see the numbers climbing every time I visit!!! :)

Kudos! and keep the great content coming!!

    • Thanks so much Roschelle ( always want to put the c before the s in your name) yes some men to evolve, my knuckles don't even scratch the ground any longer, yuppers. I have actually been using FB, Twitter, Friend Feed and other SM sites before my blog. But reading so many other blogs, including yours, I see so much resistance to using Social Media to help improve their traffic. Honestly it did take more research on how to effectively use Twitter better. But as these new apps grow, it will only get easier and better.

  9. Hey Glenn –

Great post! I've been hearing about Yahoo possibly dropping My Blog Log – so we've been making certain that we link and follow all of our contacts on Twitter – just in case. The challenge in keeping up with all of these different elements of marketing one's blog is of course the time involved, but like anything else – once you get into a rhythm and routine it goes all that much faster!

Thanks again for the good information!

My recent post BONEHEAD STIRS THE HATE

    • Thanks Joe, it is truly about a rhythm and consistency. I am finding this comment system goos, but not sure about it yet. I am written more, because I use to go to everyones website to reciprocate a comment, now I try and leave oner here and also get to their website, that is when I am running into a time crunch. BUt the social media aspect of this is great because if every one is plugged in to somepart of SM then they will get my comments I giveback anyway. But still love visiting my friends. I need to read the Bone in NY and there a Bone in the Philippine too. So that's one of my goals today to talk to you both and visit your blogs :-) You rock J Giddy,

YES abandon ship at MyBLOGLog, they are going down by the end of the month. They never really took hold in SM even think Yahoo buzz has been quite dull also. So hard for all companies/sites to be all things to all people.

  10. Love the entry. Keep up the good work! Thank you!
