Bubbe Is Part Of The Digital Nation

Digital Nation

(Note; Digital Nation airs tonight Feb 2, 2010 @ 9pm)

As I lost the battle to get this blog up and running.  Back to some semblance of what it was three days ago. A simple place where people come and get to read a little, say hello and share a story. I remembered that a show I had been waiting to see was on PBS called Digital Nation was coming on and hell or high water, I was not going to miss it.

Well, I did, but not without a consolation. I remembered that for a short time that it would be available for all to see again on the PBS website. I have left links everywhere for you to get there and I highly recommend you watch it. It is broken up inot short segments so if you don’t have time to watch it all, at least grab a segment or two.

Especially you bloggers, digital game players, internet addicted shoppers and surfers alike.  It will make you think of what this digital reveolution has accomplished in such a very short amount of time. I know what it has done for and to me, also the amount of time I spend on this machine now. Not to play a game, which many do or listen to music, watch a movie. No I am now a blogger who for one reason or another, feels the need to want to put as much effort into a little part of the universe as I can muster.

Why??? If you were born back in the early 1800′s and you were poor and lucky to have a covering to put around your foot and I told you, even thou you were dirt poor. That you could become a king of your own magical land or put into writing, whatever it is you believe in and for the rest of eternity, it would be available for others to read, like that of a great author, musician or actor?  Do you think that person would say no?

Whether or not this new Digital Age is a good or a bad thing, will take many people, into thousands of discussions and what answers they come up with will in fact be an opinion. Becuase what it means to me is completely different then it means to you or you.

As you will see in this clip from the great documentary, it effects us all in one way or another and wait until you meet Bubbe. Who by the way has her won site and you should go visit her. More then likely after84 years on this earth you will probably get an answer to your email if you feel a penchant to sendher an email.

Yesterday I wrote about Ford and a commercial they put out. Those of you who might have missed that, should take the 2 minutes to watch it. It left a tear in my eye and even a few tough guys I know who live, believe it or not at the edge of a jungle and another who can be a cantankerous sort.

In one way or another this Digital Nation touches us all, from all walks of life and yes all parts of the world. As I slept last night we had over 1500 people come here and never would have bet that something like this could ever happen. We have something here that we can use either do something good with or something very destructive like the Taliban.  Now go watch Bubbe, I bet you’ll want to watch the rest…..

  1. The only downside is lots of folks aren't getting outside and exercising much anymore.

Loved the 83 year old. She rocks.

Have a terrific day Glenn. Big hug. :)

    • No problem the whole documentary is online if you get the chance just click on any of the links, except for Bubbe’s :-)

      • I finally got to watch it tonight, and it was an incredible show. I look at the Internet as generally being a very positive force, but I can see where it could be problem for some.

        • I am glad you got to view it and how it brought up the fact that the guy who made this docu, was involved in one 10 years ago, preaching a different story. Now I have to dig that one up to watch. I just loved thou how in the conclusion, perhaps, just maybe, the world is becoming closer once again, because of technology rather then being blamed for all of it. Of course in varying degrees. I do know once you have a teenage daughter, you lost her to all these electronic devices for years to come. It’s pretty bad when you’re in the next room and they communicate to you via a cell phone text message.

  4. Well I missed it. But that is all right. I don't watch a bunch of TV anyway. Much rather read. Have a great day.
My recent post Today is cat nip day here.

  5. A very realistic post Glenn. More a reality check post…although like any technology we have advanced in…it seems to all be about faster and easier lifestyles. Everyone wants a quick fix to tomorrows problems not even spending a second on yesterdays….Hence we have become a very lazy race!

Our kids are also a very clear example of what technology has done to us… as what use to be a self sufficient race…we are quickly becoming a detached and oh so very desensitized one.

There is no work oriented generation any more. It is all about getting paid for doing the least amount of work. It is also all about the employer being honored that an employee even wants to show up for an hour here and there for work.
I have seen couples in the airport…both preoccupied with a laptop and texting on a cell phone when actually they were embarking on a holiday together. Now to me that looked hardly coupling…but to them it was what life was to them and quite acceptable. The only real problem would be if they lost internet connection or cell phone charge …oh how sad but true our so called making giant leaps forward has become.
There is something very wrong when the simplest life becomes the new vision of future hopes and survival!
Then again maybe there is hope for us yet…it is so about ..' As the world turns'…..
As I type this on my second computer…yikes….on the upside technology has not taken control of my real life…I have however met people that I would never have had the opportunity to meet without technology….then again…maybe we were not meant to meet and incorporate so many other cultures into our own….this could branch out into an entirely different topic…what if we never had television or media to show us a different way of life?

    • Dorothy what a very thought and in depth reply, which I know always comes from you. I haven;t any answers , it's kinda like the more you know the more you ask. That human cycle of life. If the last 10 years progressed like this, I can't imagine what's in store for us in the next ten.

You're so right on the younger generation, it is so hard to find a few that have any work ethic in them. So even if America started to become a manufacturing country again. How well would we compete with the global society, that works harder, faster, cheaper then we do?

  6. I certainly hope I’m has happening as Bubbe 44 years from now :o

  7. This was powerful. Yes, I see the problems, the disconnect in some aspects and the expectation of quick and easy problem solving which is not always realistic. I also see that technology can be a tool to opening eyes to other cultures and making the world a much smaller place.
Don’t you think the disaster in Haiti is more real and has gotten far more support due to current technology?
On a personal note: One of my daughters met her husband online on a gaming website. We live in MD/US and he lived in Holland. They both had a love for card games and began chatting. Next came the webcams, they talked they saw one another in real time, I was able to see and talk to him as well as his mother. They will be celebrating their 6th wedding anniversary next month!

    • Wow! how incredible is that? I would love to see the statistics of how many people now meet and get married via their first glimpse of each other via the screen that sits in front of our eyes. At one end the isolation of no human interaction to the extreme other as you portrayed so greatly by your daughters 6 year anniversary. I wish them 66 more!!!!

  8. Glenn, great post, thanks for the info. I will try to see the special, over the net. Cause coming from a guy, who once was a phobic to all of this, I think…I’m now….addicted…

I still like to read a book(real one that you can hold, with binding), get out smell the fresh air(if I could just go remote, I could net at the same time)

In short, I like real…Luvin…touchin…squeezin(I need to stream some Journey now)

    Peace.
