The Kama Sutra and the 21st Century Guy
Today’s guest poster is: Roger Goodwin, an accomplished writer who currently writes for eDrugstore.md, a safe online pharmacy. You can view other entertaining stories by Mr. Goodwin, such as The History of Viagra.
It’s an ancient text, known most for its graphic depictions of sexual positions. But the Kama Sutra is much more than that, and even today, it can teach us a lot about sex and relationships.
Ancient Nookie Wisdom
To those who haven’t read it, the Kama Sutra is “That Indian book about blow jobs, sex positions, and doing it with trannies.” While I won’t completely disavow this definition, I will attempt to do proper justice to the work’s origins. …before giving you the Cliff Notes version that you can take to the bedroom.
The Kama Sutra was written in the second century by Mallanaga Vatsyayana, though it is a compilation of texts–some of which may have been authored way before then. Many scholars consider it to be one of the all-time top works on human sexual behavior. Enough history. Let’s get to the good stuff.
Five Things from the Kama Sutra You Can Use
- Be excellent to each other. It’s not all about the sex. The Kama Sutra espouses the harmonious lifelong practice of Dharma (virtuous living), Artha (the acquisition of material goods), an Kama (pleasure). Seriously, dudes–don’t forget the Dharma. Not only does it impress the ladies, it all comes back around to you. I forget what the word for that is.
- Round out your resume. We live in an age of specialization, but the Kama Sutra recommends that in addition to all that sex stuff, one should study the arts. And while the mastery of fixing stained glass into a floor or accumulating water into cisterns may not be as appreciated in the 21st century as they were in the second, learning to sing, dance, play an instrument, or cast spells through sorcery will not only give you a boost in the pickup department, they will improve your quality of life.
- Foreplay. These ancients were serious about it. So serious, in fact, that they had four different categories of embraces, four types of kisses, and eight varieties of biting. Since an evening at the local club usually covers all 16 of those actions, just know that the importance of foreplay was not invented by womens’ libbers; it’s ancient n’ stuff, so do it. A word of warning: A man who is good at foreplay will become popular with the ladies. Use your skills wisely lest you end up on the Valtrex top customer list.
- Variety is the spice of life. Sexual positions: it’s what the Kama Sutra is most famous for. There are ways of putting together the lingam and the yoni that you may not even have imagined. There are countless books and Web sites that (sometimes graphically) illustrate the sexual positions contained in the Kama Sutra. Before you hit the Googles, though, you might want to consider limbering up with a little yoga first.
- Be a man of mystery. Much of what is contained in the Kama Sutra is dated. I mean, few marriage counselors would argue against a union because the woman is affected with the gulma. But when read within its cultural context and with modern values applied, there is much within these and other ancient texts that can teach us a lot about the evolution–and thus the current state–of relationships. Such knowledge can only improve a man’s quality. And it makes some awesome pickup lines, too.
“Pardon me, miss. I couldn’t help but notice that you might be someone who has an interest in the sporting of a sparrow…”

Nice article. Learning a little bit more about Kama Sutra is always good. Putting what you’ve learned to practice is even better
Balance is always a good thing, foreplay is even better.
